A brilliant red with a purple hue. A intense bouquet, mint, aniseed, cherry, raspberry, liqorice and freshly cracked pepper. The palate is rich, focused and tight, loaded with bright acid that drives the fruit to the middle palate, the fruit is then backed by powerful and flavoursome tannins. This is easily the tightest of the Two Hands 'Garden Series' and will reward mid to long term cellaring taking 2-3 years to show it's best. The wine dispalys subtle new oak influence and tastes of lush and pure fruit.
Fermentation Techniques: The grapes were crushed to a potter fermenter and fermented for eight days on skins with pump overs twice daily to extract colour and tannin. The grapes were then bag pressed to a tank and the wine was then transferred to tank and racked before barrel maturation.

Padthaway enjoyed an excellent season that commenced with a good budburst. Good rains throughout the spring gave vines a positive start and minimised the need for irrigation. Only two minor frosts were experienced in spring and these caused no damage to vines. A shorter than usual flowering period with warm and calm weather gave an excellent fruit set in most varieties. The hot dry summer filled bunches well and there was virtually no disease problem.
The bird problems experienced in the preceding vintage were not evident and little damage occurred.Harvest started a little earlier than normal and finished later due to cool weather from mid-March. Baumes in later harvested varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, were slow to lift, however no significant ripening problems were reported.
Most vineyards experienced above average yields of approximately 15% higher than normal, and approximately 25-30% higher than the 2000 vintage that experienced reduced yields. Fruit quality was excellent resulting from an ideal growing season and the resultant wines similarly were expected to be of elevated quality.

2001 Two Hands Sophie’s Garden Padthaway Shiraz
Strong black in colour the bouquet is immediately cooler with notes of Asian spice, clove, western red cedar, olive branch, liquorice and dark chocolate, on the nose this is still tight and brooding. The palate has a very broad weight of concentrated fruit the builds strongly in the mouth. This is a fun ride but the back end lacks acidic life and tannin weight. This would be best drunk sooner rather than later, in the next 1 to 3 years. MT

Brick red
The nose is very interesting with notes of spicy red fruit, cloves, earth, tar, moss rock and forest floor. The palate disappoints a little. The entry is soft with lovely red/black fruits and licorice spice, but overall there is no great structure, weight or persistence. Still a pleasant drink, so enjoy for the next 2 years. – MW
