Wine Advocate 2018 – Barossa Revisited

The Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski visited Two Hands earlier this year and the results of his visit to us and our Barossa friends are featured in issue # 238 of Wine Advocate, released September 1.

We’re delighted at the results, with 13 wines awarded 90+ points.

Once again, it’s a testament to our team’s dedication and the blood, sweat and tears that go into each wine we craft.

“Under the watchful eyes of owner Michael Twelftree and general manager Pierre-Henri Morel, Two Hands is making a collection of Shirazes that may be unrivaled in the world for expressing the places where they’re grown. The Garden series faithfully represents individual growing regions in the aggregate sense, with clear distinctions that can be made between, for example, Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, but extending to the differences between Clare, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Heathcote. Moving up the quality ladder, the single-vineyard wines showcase individual (dare I say?) terroirs, several within Barossa itself. 2015 Ares Shiraz [Barossa Valley] – 96 Points

“A blend of fruit from three historic vineyards in three separate parts of Barossa, the 2015 Ares Shiraz is a top-flight effort. Loaded with vanilla and red currants on the nose, it’s a full-bodied, rich, velvety wine, perhaps a bit open-knit for truly long-term cellaring but flashy and attractive now and over the next decade or so. Fine notes of baking spices bring complexity to the red fruits on the long, crisp finish.”

2016 Dave’s Block Shiraz [McLaren Vale] – 97 Points

“No doubt some will find it ironic that my top rated wine from Two Hands is this McLaren Vale

Shiraz. But the 2016 Shiraz Dave’s Block Blythmans Road Blewitt Springs was just the most elegant and harmonious of the recent offerings. Mint accents cherries and blueberries in this fullbodied, plush, creamy-textured wine whose flavors linger forever on the silky finish. Those folks in McLaren Vale just might be on to something!”

2016 Heartbreak Hill Shiraz [Clare Valley] – 95 Points

“Sourced from the Clare Valley, the 2016 Shiraz Heartbreak Hill Roach Road White Hut is a terrific wine, not out of place at all among the Barossans in the Two Hands line-up. Loaded with raspberry fruit and dried spices, it’s full-bodied, supple and long, with fine-grained, silky tannins that caress the palate. Remarkable, given the vines are only 12-13 years old.”

“One of my favorites from Two Hands, the 2016 Shiraz Coach House Block Seppeltsfield Road Greenock marries rich blueberry and chocolate flavors with savory, meaty notes in a creamy whirl of complexity. This full-bodied wine is supple, velvety and long on the finish—everything you’d ever want in a Barossa Valley Shiraz.”

2016 Holy Grail Shiraz [Barossa Valley] – 94 Points

“A new bottling from Two Hands, the 2016 Shiraz Holy Grail Seppeltsfield Road Seppeltsfield comes from a historic vineyard purchased from Jayson Woodbridge, who used it for his Hundred Acre project. Blueberry and blackberry fruit mingle on the nose and palate in this rich, fullbodied beauty. It’s creamy and supple on the palate, with a long, vanilla-tinged finish.”

2016 Secret Block Shiraz [Barossa Valley] – 94 Points

“The 2016 Shiraz Secret Block Wildlife Road Moppa Hills is another tightly structured wine from Two Hands. It’s medium to full-bodied, with crisp boysenberry, raspberry and even cranberry notes. Give it a couple of years in the cellar to round into form, and drink it over the next 15 years.”

2016 Yacca Block Shiraz [Eden Valley] – 93 Points

“From the cooler Eden Valley, the 2016 Shiraz Yacca Block Mengler’s Hill Road comes across as a bit tight, crisp and firm. It offers attractive clove and cherry notes on the nose, but it’s linear and verging on austere on the palate before finishing on a silky note. It will prove eye-opening for consumers who think that Barossa Shiraz is all fat, alcoholic and overripe, and after a couple of years in the cellar to loosen up, it should drink well for more than a decade.”

2016 Bella’s Garden Shiraz [Barossa Valley] – 92 Points
“The 2016 Shiraz Bella’s Garden, from the winery’s “home turf” in the Barossa Valley, features luscious aromas of mixed berries, vanilla and just enough meaty notes to keep the wine from being overly fruit-driven. Instead, it’s savory and complex, with cedar framing the ample fruit, and it has fine-grained, silky tannins and a long, crisp finish. Nicely done.”

2016 Charlie’s Garden Shiraz [Eden Valley] – 92 Points

“The smoky, peppery, meaty aromas of the 2016 Shiraz Charlie’s Garden are immediately mouth-watering, leading into a medium to full-bodied wine that’s sturdy, savory and appetizing. It’s ripe yet firm, perfectly suited to pairing with nearly any red-meat preparation over the next decade.”

2016 Lily’s Garden Shiraz [McLaren Vale] – 91 Points

“Elegant notes of pencil shavings and red cherries appear on the nose of the 2016 Shiraz Lily’s Garden. It’s a taut, medium to full-bodied wine with fine-grained, almost silky tannins, a wiry core of red fruit and just the right touch of oak for balance on the focused, lingering finish.”

2016 Samantha’s Garden Shiraz [Clare Valley] – 90 Points

“Cinnamon and clove notes mark the nose of the 2016 Shiraz Samantha’s Garden, a medium to full-bodied wine characterized by spice and a grainy, open-knit texture. Blackberry and cassis make appearances as well, while the finish shows hints of smoke and pepper. Appealing already, I’d opt for drinking it over the next several years.”

2017 Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon [McLaren Vale] – 90 Points

“The classically styled 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Sexy Beast features hints of mint and cocoa on the nose, alongside cassis and baking spices. It’s medium to full-bodied, with a certain amount of varietal reserve, meaning it doesn’t completely fill the mouth or coat the palate like Shiraz but shows a crisp, linear and well-defined finish.”
