Blue Skies

At Two Hands we’ve been long-time supporters of sustainable charitable initiatives to support those less fortunate than us. Our 2022 project is a limited edition Cabernet Franc called ‘Blue Skies’.

One of the greatest qualities in life is to show compassion. Let’s help others smile and enjoy the Blue Skies too.

We are proud to announce ‘Blue Skies’, a limited edition Cabernet Franc from the great Hickinbotham vineyard at Clarendon, high on the hills above McLaren Vale. We welcome you to help with this year’s Two Hands Wines charity initiative. Its job is to make you smile and to hopefully improve the life of somebody else along the way, with 100% of the sale price donated to the Hutt St Centre.

‘Blue Skies’ is named after the song, which was originally composed by Irving Berlin in 1926. It made its debut in the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. Over the years it has been covered by Ella Fitzgerald and Willie Nelson.

VINEYARD SITE

The vineyard we source this Cabernet Franc from sits a top of the Hickinbotham vineyard in Clarendon, a sub-region of McLaren Vale. The vines are mature, tightly spaced, and trained very low to the ground. As it is an elevated site sitting at 259 meters above sea level, and the fruit ripens very slowly. This played perfectly into the 2021 vintage conditions for the winery team, that we witnessed near-perfect ripening weather, and it is a vintage that we at Two Hands will be talking about for many more years to come.

VINIFICATION

In the winery this fruit was fermented slowly as a potentially very special parcel. During the blind barrel tasting trials between Two Hands Proprietor, Michael Twelftree, and Chief Winemaker, Richard Langford, Michael pulled it out as something special that could possibly become its own bottling. Over the next 12 months in oak they checked in on it from time to time and suddenly it rang their bell. MT loves Cabernet Franc as a straight varietal, Richard is not as keen on Cab Franc as MT but the quality of this wine is undeniably fantastic, thus Blue Skies was created.
