What to expect | Seasons at the vineyard

Spring

September, October & November

Sap rises from the roots and the first signs of new growth occur in the vineyard. New buds are very delicate and can be affected by frost or hail storms at this time. The first sprays for the season are applied in the vineyard to support new vine growth and health. The buds grow into shoots and flowers. We conduct our first round of yield estimations to forecast our potential crop for the year.

Summer

December, January & February

Veraison is the onset of ripeness, which means the colour of the grape berries change. Our vines are monitored by sap flow monitoring technology and irrigation is applied if required.

Closer to March sugar levels rise and acidity lowers in the grapes until they are perfectly ripe. Picking decisions are made by tasting the fruit daily in each individual block. All vines are picked by hand.

Autumn

March, April & May

Fresh straw is added under the vine every three years to help increase organics, lower evaporation and to lower soil temperature. Post vintage watering is applied, to help the vine pull carbohydrates from the canopy to store in the vine roots over winter. Foliage starts to senescence, leaves start falling off and the vine goes into dormancy.

Winter

June, July & August

Last year’s growth is cut back and the vine is pruned back to 2 canes. Compost is spread through the mid row to build up the organic matter in our soil. A cover crop are sown in a dry land Rye grass, Medics and clover have been planted in alternate rows to permeate mid row sward. We receive most of our annual rainfall over winter. This allows the water to drain deep in our clay soils.
